Â
Hey friends! Today we’re learning a recipe for making rasam, a yummy soup from South India. We’ll use a special powder to make it super easy.
Â
What is Rasam Powder?
Â
A rasam powder recipe is usually a mix of spices that gives rasam its special taste. People often make it at home, but for our recipe for making rasam, we’re using a ready-made one to save time.
Â
Why Iyengar’s Naivedyam Special Rasam Powder?
Â
I’ll be honest, I used to think healthy rasam powder was the only way to go. But this prepared mixture comes in rather handy on hectic days. It’s got that perfect blend of spices that gives rasam its signature taste without the hassle of roasting and grinding your own spices.
Â
Let’s Make Rasam!
Â
Here’s what you need for our recipe for making rasam:
– 1/4 cup toor dal (a type of lentil)
– 1 tomato
– 2 teaspoons Iyengar’s Naivedyam Special Rasam Powder
– 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
– Salt
– 2 cups water
– 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– A few curry leaves
– 2 dried red chilies
– Cilantro
– Lemon juice
Â
How to make it:
Â
1. Cook the toor dal until it’s soft.
2. In a bowl, mash up the tomato. Stir in the turmeric, a pinch of salt, and the rasam powder.
3. Add the tomato mix to the cooked dal. Pour in the water and let it cook for 10 minutes.
4. Heat the oil in a small pan. Curry leaves, red chilies, mustard and cumin seeds should be added. Transfer this into the rasam as soon as they burst.
5. Add chopped coriander and squeeze in some lemon juice.
Â
That’s it! Your rasam is ready. You can eat it with rice or drink it like soup.
While we used a ready-made powder, you can also try making your own rasam powder recipe at home. A typical rasam powder recipe usually contains ingredients like coriander seeds, cumin, and pepper.
